About Ashoka's Fellow Security Program

Social change is dangerous.

In societies without the institutions to effectively resolve the conflicts inherent in social change, change leaders become targets of threats and attacks as they strive to change the systems causing social problems in their communities. Over the past decade, social entrepreneurs have experienced an escalation in the persistence and severity of threats, including physical attacks, libel, detention, and interrogation.

Ashoka launched its security program in 2005 to mobilize the Ashoka community to protect Ashoka Fellows, and by extension their families, colleagues, and the communities they serve. Ashoka's Fellow Security Program:

  • Helps social entrepreneurs analyze, prevent, and respond to threats
  • Offers emergency support to Ashoka Fellows under threat
  • Builds support networks to enable social entrepreneurs to work safely and securely
